Storm damage happens on the outside and the inside
Storms damage properties in two ways at once. On the outside, wind lifts shingles, tears flashing, breaks windows and knocks down branches or entire trees. On the inside, the openings created by that damage let rain pour into attics, ceilings and walls. By the time the storm passes, a home in Berlin, OH may have a hole in the roof and a soaked living room below it.
Storm damage restoration handles both sides together. There is no point drying an interior while rain continues to come through the roof, and no point repairing the roof if the drywall below is left to grow mold. We work outside in and top down: secure the exterior first, then remove water and dry the interior, then rebuild.
Storm damage needs attention if you see
- Missing or lifted shingles and exposed roof decking
- Water stains or dripping from ceilings after rain
- Broken windows or damaged doors
- Fallen trees or large limbs on the structure
- Wet insulation or damp spots in the attic
Emergency protection comes first
Immediately after a storm, the priority is preventing additional water from getting in. Our crews install heavy-duty tarps over damaged roof sections, board up broken windows and doors and remove debris that poses a hazard to the structure or to people. Tarping is a temporary measure, but a properly secured tarp can hold up until permanent repairs are made.
We also photograph and document exterior damage before and after emergency repairs. Insurers generally expect property owners to take reasonable steps to prevent further damage, and emergency tarping and board-up are exactly that. Keeping a clear record helps show what was damaged by the storm and what was done to protect the property.
Drying the interior and repairing the structure
Once the property is secure, we move inside. Wet insulation in the attic is removed, ceilings are checked for sagging, and drywall, carpet and furnishings that absorbed rainwater are assessed. Standing water is extracted, and air movers and dehumidifiers dry the structure. Because rainwater often travels along rafters and down wall cavities, we map moisture carefully before deciding what to remove.
Repairs follow drying. Our crews replace damaged insulation, drywall, ceilings and flooring, and we coordinate roof, window and siding repairs so the building envelope is sound again. Throughout the project, you receive documentation of the damage, the emergency work and the repairs.
